Old vine Xinomavro from a single-vineyard, ungrafted vines from a particularly successful vintage - drinking well now but with the structure to age. A new Grand Cru
Aftorizo is the highly anticipated, single vineyard Naoussa of Apostolos Thymiopoulos. Derived from self-routed (planted in their own roots and not on an American subject), old vines from a vineyard in the mountains of Fytia, in the southern part of Naoussa. The soil is a combination of slate and granite that provides the mineral backbone of the wine.
The Thymiopoulos family had been growing Xinomavro grapes on the southern tip of the Náoussa wine region, one of Greece's most established producing ageworthy, lively reds on the slopes of Mount Vermio, for several generations. It was on his return from oenology training in Athens that Apostolos began the eponymous winery in 2003, based on his family's vineyards, which nowadays supply Thymiopoulos. It is now cultivated biodynamically and certified organic.
Tasting Note: Gorgeous bouquet of fragrant wild red fruits, pomegranate, seductively sweet but structured palate reminiscent of Côte de Nuits Burgundy or Barolo.
Critics: Jancis Robinson 17.5/20 (2017) "Apostolos Thymiopoulous must be so proud of this wine!", Yiannis Karakasis MW 94/100 (2016)
